Starkbass review

Category: , By brockolio

Philadelphia's Starkey back again with his latest release, a continuous DJ mix entitled 'Starkbass' on LoDubs records. Whether it be through his appearance on Generation Bass with Mary Anne Hobbes, his highly acclaimed 2008 debut album 'Ephemeral Exhibits' on PlanetMu, his Seclusiasis Radio show on, or on one of his recent globetrotting tours, Starkey is a name on the tip of the tongue throughout the world of bass. His sound stays true to Philly's club roots while at the same time incorporating sounds and textures not oftenly associated with club music and hip hop in general.

His latest release 'Starkbass' takes you through his approach as a DJ with it's hard, jolting mixes, frenetic basslines, and crushing 8-bit arpeggios that will break your neck if you're not careful. Mix features huge tunes from fellow Seclusiasis label-mates dev79 and BD1982, some mashers from Lo Dubs associates Pacheko, Cardopusher, and XI, Hyperdub lovin' from Zomby and Joker as well as some new unreleased tracks from Starkey himself. Pure bassline carnage all the way through, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Starkey at the top of his game.

Be on the look out for his forthcoming release on PlanetMu 'Creatures/Miracles (Jamie Vex'd remix) coming soon.

"Glasgow's Numbers crew hosted the Jak:Bloc room at the BLOC Weekend festival a couple weeks ago. Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Jackmaster and myself had a great time in there, and apart from dealing with a few technical difficulties I've collected a few great campfire stories to tell friends!

In the middle of my set, the bar personnel on the other side of the room accidentally started their CD player, so while I was in the mix I suddenly heard Simply Red's "Fairground" blaring through the speakers! A 20 minute snippet of this set was broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Leftfield show hosted by Rob Da Bank. However, something went wrong in converting the sound files though, so what was played on the show was at the wrong speed!!! (the whole set was at least 10-15 bpm too slow) I decided to put the correct version online for all of you to listen to (and left the Simply Red bit in there all the way at the end)."

New one from DuttyArtz crew's Matt Shadetek, a 22 minute mix of tunes featuring Jahdan Blakkamoore with exclusive remixes from Shadetek, Zomby, Visionary, and Ghislain. Rusko: Seattle

Category: , By brockolio

Seattle's Shift. crew coming through in the clutch yet again, hooking up some Wednesday night wreckage for those on hand to catch Rusko & Dub Police MC Rod Azlan at the Trinity Nightclub downtown.

Arrived in time to catch the last few tunes of Shift's Spoonz on the decks, rinsing some dutty PacificNorthwest dubs and ending with one of the biggest mashers on wax right now Akira Kiteshi's 'Pinball' out now on Black Acre recordings.

Azlan then stepped up to the mic giving way to Rusko hopping on the wheels of steel.

'Rus-ko Ban-ton!'

Rusko pummeled the almost full up club with a selection of some of his classic tunes, some newer as of yet unreleased material, as well as some Bassline and Jump Up action dispersed throughout the killer hour and a half set.

"I haven't got a clue what's going on."

Highlights included Caspa and Drop The Lime's 'Cockney Thug' remixes, Caspa's remix of 'Where's My Money' mixed swiftly into the Jack Beats rework, the Jakes 'Rock The Bells VIP' (as if the basslines in that tune could get any crazier), Rusko's recent collaborative effort with Crookers 'Oy!', Cotti's 'Rise De Temperature', Rusko remixes of 'Day N Nite' and Skream's 'Dutch Flowers' as well as the classic bangers that we still can't get enough of. The set ended with some serious Jump Up tunes including his collaborative joints with Clipz as well as the 'Offline VIP'.

Out to Rusko as always. He said to expect his long awaited follow-up EP, Babylon vol. 2 in the next couple weeks featuring 'Moanerz', 'Soundguy', and 'Mr Muscle' as well as his full-length debut LP releasing on Mad Decent late this August.

Also want to big up Angela Dawn yet again on her stunning shots of the night, the Shift. crew for bringing in the talent, and to Rusko & Rod Azlan for making their first trips to Seattle. EZ on the road fellas, see you guys in Whistler.

Get slimey! Night Slug Alex Bok-Bok with a March mix for the heads over at Discobelle. Here's what he had to say about his mix, "“For my installment of Mixing It Up, I wanted to give you guys a taste of where the Night Slugs sound is at right now. 2009 has been amazing so far, people are more open-minded than ever, sets are diverse and suddenly it feels like anything is possible.

As a DJ my aim is to gather tracks from a wide range of sources, scenes and styles and make them all work together in a riddim-y, dutty uk soundsystem / pirate conext. I’m originally a grime head, but the emergence of the UK Funky scene has got me looking for that raw percussive momentum and bass energy in all sorts of strange places.

To guarantee that rolling pirate style, this mix was recorded live on the decks (as I’m sure you’ll hear!). I recommend listening on a night drive / while cycling, or running, preferably at night, and if you’re listening at home turn up your sub!”

Check out his commentary on the tracklist as well.

1. Riva Starr - War Drums

An out-of-character tune for Riva Starr, all minimal nail-biting toms, this is the perfect ‘oh no it’s gon happen! ‘ intro.

2. Karizma - Outta Control

UK Funky hits like Donaeo’s Party Hard have got us drawing for the Defected and Strictly Rhythm back catalogs, and digging up things like this haunted riddim by Karizma. I love the brass section!

3. Essy & Vibes - Dream On

Tunes like this are the reason I like to call the new UK House movement ‘Grime in Disguise’. Tropical bass!

4. Perason Sound - Wad

This was made by a certain house and techno-infused producer of twisted dubstep - guess who. Banging broken, twitchy house with a big gutter sub. I can’t stop playing this one at the moment.

5. Martin Kemp - No Charisma

I’m sort of responsible for the title of this track - it’s a funny-ish story that I won’t tell here. This twilight riddim with the heavy kwaito pitchbending synth line was produced by Martin Kemp, the brother of badderman DJ Brackles, and is forthcoming on the later’s label.

6. Gregor Salto - Just For Fun (Bok Bok’s edit ft. Hawatha

The vocal on this track comes from Hawatha, a Texas rapper that my friend Prince William is working with at Krispee Ones studios. Out to the TX connection.

7. L-Vis 1990 - Run

This L-Vis dubplate is a current personal favourite of mine. He makes it seem so easy!

8. Emvee - Glitch Dub

The drop on this tune is devastating! UK house at it’s most cantankerous.

9. Wizzbit - Jam Nite

Wizzbit is the alias of garage>grime>funky godfather Geeneus. He’s worked a lot of styles over the years but despite Jam Nite dating back to 2003 the insane bruckout drums and the huge bassline in this tune sound more relevant than ever. Definitely one of my favourite grime classics.

10. Karizma - Darqness

If you’re driving to this mix like I recommended, this is when your vehicle takes flight. Jackin’ celestial merkery from Karizma.

11. Sarantis ft Warrior Queen - More Than Money (Starkey remix)

Starkey transforms Warrior Queen’s pining ballad for the ‘boys dem’ into a cyborg hypergrime tribute to sweet love.

12. Spooky - Got Myself Together Riddim

Spooky is king of grime bootlegs, and this is no exception. The sweet vocal hook is swiped from a classic uk garage track and twisted into Spooky’s signature carnival style.

13. Diplo & Laidback Luke - Hey! (L-Vis 1990 remix)

I love the original of this tune too, but also love how L-Vis made it sound really immersive and disorientating.

14. Zomby - Entropy

Fresh from the ever-mutating Zomby - alien, crunked-up house/grime/dubstep.

15. Joe - Rut

Rut is forthcoming on the amazing Hessle Audio, and you can tell straight away when you hear it. A beautifully executed, lush and percussive garage-dubstep track with a unique celestial warmth.

16. Lil Silva - Get Wid This

We Night Slugs are big Lil Silva fans. His decidedly grimey take on UK Funky has set a benchmark for huge, driving productions that simply destroy raves. The combination of militant brutality and luminously bright carnival synths remind me of why I love grime.

17. Bok Bok - Ram Riddim

Something that mutated out of working with L-Vis on our Bongo Jam refix. Ram, because originally there was a typo in our refix that read “Bongo Ram”. Say what you mean eh?

18. Kingdom - You

Kingdom is absolutely unique and one of my favourite producers. He blends the aesthetics of UK garage with classic rave, hardcore, jumpstyle, - even trance, with a heavy dose of the drama and emotion of classic Chicago house. His new material is on fire!

19. Matt Shadetek - Battery Charge Riddim

I love the story that Matt’s Brooklyn Riddim was appropriated up by bashment kids in NYC and it became a hit in that scene. Never one to stand by idly, Matt made a whole batch of grimey bashment/house directly aimed at that scene, this riddim is one of them. Sounds like a 4×4 Ruff Sqwad

20. Christian Martin - Elephant Fight (Justin Martin’s Jungle remix)

A deceptive subtitle for a remix that’s not Jungle style so much as it’s IS a jungle, a sweltering pressure dungeon. Those elephants are NOT happy.

21. Untold - Sweat

Forthcoming on Hotflush Recordings, this track is my rubbery yet blissed out outro. Enjoy!

dev79- In Ya Face EP review

Category: , , By brockolio

Philadelphia's dev79 with a brand spankin new release showcasing the streetbass sounds of Seclusiasis, a Philly-based label who have also recently featured releases from Kotchy, BD1982, as well as Starkey and dev79's highly acclaimed mixtape series 'Streetbass Anthems.' You'll find dev79 tearing up dancefloors across the US sharing bills with the likes of Girl Talk, Drop the Lime, Plastician, Starkey, and the Digital Mystikz among others.

'In Ya Face' is a defining track of that streetbass sound; ghettotech tastefully infused with hip hop and club music with some undeniably catchy hooks and drum patterns that you can't help but flex to. Edu K's remix brings his jackin' house style to the tune transforming it into an electro heavy house banger complete with distorted synth stabs and trill vocal samples. The Pharoah and Peaches remix brings a different approach with some heavy reverb along with that dubstep swing, off-beat piano chord skank, and a bass heavy groove that you just can't help but love. Watch out for that synth line, because it will be stuck in your head for days. Egyptrixx's remix brings some heavy 4x4 bassline action into the fray, accentuating a hammering drum beat that is sure to get crowds in the clubs off their heads. The EP is rounded off with the Willy Joy remix (available with Digital Release only) with its psychadelic wobbly and gooey basslines, panning and chopped up vocal samples and bit-driven synths designed to create utter mayhem on a dancefloor.

Juno Download

Also, be sure to catch dev79 at the 'In Ya Face' release party at Transit in Philly March 20th alongside Trouble & Bass DJ's Star Eyes and the Captain.

Bassfaced: Portland!

Category: By brockolio

Another huge weekend of beats and basslines in the PDX! Thursday night the Fresh party at the Crown Room got it started right with Abstract Earth and Desiderata Productions bringing in Reso, Eprom, RD, and Tyler Tastemaker vs. Behnibubu.

We arrived to the sounds of RD warming the place up with some dancefloor oriented IDM and Glitch. San Francisco's EPROM was the next to man the mixer and wasted no time immediately dropping the killer bassline tune from MOVES!!! 'All Skate' out now on Dress 2 Sweat. He threw down a hell of a bubbling 8-bit set that got the subs flexing, asses shaking, and the dancefloor heads bobbing.

Check out the promo mix he was handing out to the crowd HERE. (direct link)

Be sure to grab his '64bytes' EP (which went OFF at the Crown Room) from Addictech with remixes from Mat The Alien, Vibesquad, Boreta, ill.gates ft. Meesha and Mat the Alien, WeaponsHouse, as well as EPROM's own remix of the tune.

Next up on the decks, straight outta the UK was Reso causing tremors on the dancefloor with his unique brand of brutal, chest-rattling, in your face dubstep. Highlights from the set included 501's 'Get Back', Chase & Status' 'Saxon' and huge tunes from Reso himself 'Onslaught' and 'Smash Your Face In' (now available for free download HERE). He also pushed the tempo into some breaks territory after dropping his tune 'If Ya Can't Beat Em' naturally lending its way into some serious 4x4 surging basslines. Here's a few more shots of the night sniped by the wonderful Angela Dawn, you can scope the whole flickr stream of the night here.

Friday night brought us back to the Crown Room for Round 2. This time it was the team of Euphonic Conceptions, Abstract Earth, and 1320 records bringing in the talents of Devon, Alex B, and Gaslamp Killer in a latenight affair running until the early hours. Regretfully we didn't make it in time to catch Devon, but make sure to check his Myspace or catch him live at Berbati's Pan in Portland on March 12 alongside Dain. He also put up a couple beats on his MySpace that you can download for free. Alex B straight murdered it with a wide range of deep sounds and spacey futuristic hip-hop that will bring out the inner Dilla fan in us all. Fans of LuckyMe and the Brainfeeder crew definitely look out for the kid because he is going to be making some big moves. You can download his first beat tape HERE on his website and also download a free Dilla remix he did recently. Also, check his blog focused mainly around home studio hip-hop production over at

After AlexB, it was time for none other than the Mother.Fucking GASLAMP KILLER. GLK threw down an amazing and eclectic set that tapped into the sounds of dubstep, hip hop, and just about everything in between. He's got an incredibly unique stage presence and a style of mixing completely his own that makes for one hell of a live experience. He threw down a set of rough and tuff dubstep tracks as well as tunes from the Hyperdub, LuckyMe, and Brainfeeder labels and blended them all together in a seamless and at the same time completely chaotic fashion. 16Bit's 'Chainsaw Calligraphy', Rustie & Joker's 'Play-Doe', and a hot off the presses remix of Flying Lotus by the master of 'bitstep' Quarta330 were some of the standout tunes from the set. GLK was also just selected by MAH to be a part of her annual showcase at the Sonar festival in Barcelona this summer alongside Joker and Martyn.

Saturday night, the skankout stamina was truly tested with a huge dubstep dubbleheader. Started the night off proper at the VariousPDX monthly at Branx, which if you've never been before is exactly where you want to see dubstep music. The place is no bullshit, no decor, dark, and in the middle of a bunch of warehouses in the Southeast.

The extra sound brought in by HAS was serious and had even the most seasoned of bassweight vets Joe Nice nodding his head in approval. Night began with deep sets from Various resident DJs Monkeytek and Ryan Organ to warm the system up for everyone. Really nice contrast to Gaslamp Killer and Reso's sets earlier on in the weekend and it was nice to get the broad scope of the different styles within the sound. Monkeytek let us know that these opening sets will be broadcast on at some point in the near future so we'll be sure to keep you all in the loop when that happens.

Next to step to the decks was rudeboy Dopelabs who started to bring things a little bit heavier and more unsettling. You can download his full hour-long set HERE.

Searchl1te from Chicago then brought a gritty set featuring a monstrous tracklist over the hour and a half slot. Unreleased tunes from Hexidecibel, Starkey, HD4000 and others. Look out for Starkey's remix of Ghislain, the Mr. Curtamos remix of t2's Niche classic 'Heartbroken', and Don Goliath's 'No Soundboy No Cry'; all big tunes. Out to Dopelabs and Chelsea Ross on the shots from Various.

For a second time on the night we stumbled back across the Burnside Bridge to catch Joe Nice man the decks latenight at Berbati's Pan. A monstrous set that started around 4am and didn't let up until the lights were turned on at 5am to the sounds of Skream's jungle tribute tune 'Burnin Up.' Huge set that featured a grab bag session, Jakes' murderous 'Rock The Bells', some unreleased Mala, and a vicious vicious new Kutz plate. Out to Joe each and every. 'I don't have any hip hop...this is dubstep!!!'

Want to take the time to shout out and thank everyone that we met along the way! Angela Dawn for her stunning photos, Victor from Surefire, Pete and Keith from Abstract Earth, Dave from ECP, Geno, NoahD, Joe Nice, Ryan Organ and the whole Various crew...big ups yourselves!!!
