This duo has slammed the drum n' bass scene with hits such as "Dumpling Riddim" and "Duppy Man" and now they're infiltrating the sounds of the future dub and dubstep with bangers such as "Unknown" and now this bluddclat wikkid choon called "Eastern Jam" (formally known as Indian Dub). This is a prime example of the deep sounds that dubstep has pioneered fused with the angelic melodies of the eastern riddims, a proper predecessor to the legendary Sholay, among others. Chase and Status said on Dubstep Forum...

"Eastern Jam will b coming out on our LP 'More Than Alot' on Ram. It will b available as the vinyl sampler for the album with a dnb tune on the flip at the end of September. Glad people are feelin the beats. More info on the other dubstep tracks soon...."

“I’ve never thought of myself as an MC,” reveals John Lashley reluctantly over the phone from his home in New York. Lashley, who performs as Juakali, wasn’t billed as “MC” until 2006, after his residency at NYC dubstep party Dub War started picking up steam. “The only way people associate a reggae artist toasting over electronic music is through drum & bass,” he says ruefully. “I’m not even a drum & bass head anyway!”

Nonetheless, Lashley is using his ragga vocal talents to break the typical MC mold. In addition to mic duties at Big Apple monthlies Dub War and Sub Swara, he performs with the Dub Liberation Front band, and recently opened for Meat Beat Manifesto at their NYC show. But it’s overseas travels that have yielded the Trinidadian-born artist the most opportunities, including his first vinyl single, which was recently issued on Czech label Gunjah. “I wanted people to understand that even though I’m involved in electronic music, this is where I’m coming from,” says Lashley of the track, a straight roots reggae number entitled “Run Babylon.”

Reggae influences have remained at the forefront of his collaborations with Bristol dubstep producer Pinch, U.K. digital dub artists Alpha and Omega, and American electronic music fusionists Moldy and Kush Arora. “Juakali is taking a traditional style and blending it in new ways,” says Arora. “He’s showing that Caribbean culture won’t be left behind in the ashes of the digital revolution.”

Lately, Lashley’s revolution has been realized at Dub War. “[At dubstep events], I can switch a flow three times in one song, where in dancehall or reggae you can’t really do that,” he says. Dub War has become a forum for him to try new verses or songs that eventually end up on record.

Lashley, who has a new album in the works, believes that, in the age of iPod mixes and file-sharing, listeners are more hyped on live shows than ever. “Going to a concert is a bigger deal than getting the DVD of the concert,” he says. And if you expect to catch Juakali any time soon, you’ll have to leave the house. “I’m trying to pay rent, so I have to get out on the road and play live!”

Interrogating Martyn

Does Martyn play drum n bass? Techno? House? Dubstep? Or all of the above? Dave Rinehart investigates.

Hard one to pigeonhole, Martyn. When the Dutch producer plays at RA’s off-Sonar event in Barcelona this weekend, it'll be alongside techno acts such as Daniel Bell and Conforce. Last month at MUTEK he shared a bill with hip-hopper Flying Lotus and dubstepper Kode9. His last gig at Fabric was opening François K dub-centric Deep Space night.

"I've always collected all different styles of music, and I just love to play different styles of music out as well,” explains Martyn. "I always carry lots of dubstep, lots of house, even some hip-hop, some soundscapes, just anything really.”

That’s not to say that Martyn is one of those dreaded “eclectic” DJs who is all about mashing up the unexpected; it’s just that Martyn happens to make music at the nexus of different genres. For the past year or so, dubstep and techno have been eyeing each other from across the room, and Martyn’s bass-heavy, melancholy-tinged tunes such as 'Broken' and 'Twenty Four' have been among the first to consummate the relationship.

A DJ for a dozen years or more, Martyn’s first love was not dub and dubstep but rather drum n bass—his first records arrived on Marcus Intalex’s label Revolve:r in 2005. Lately he has started his own label, 3024, and released records on Appleblim’s new imprint Apple Pips. Future plans? Well, aside from getting married and moving to America, he’s intent on making a debut album, not to mention DJing every weekend. But since he carts round such a wide range of records to a wide range of gigs, surely he takes requests? "Well,” says Martyn. “My favorite gigs are the ones where they tell me, 'We just want Martyn. We don't care what you play, just do what you want to do."

We're back!

After an amazing trip to sunny Cali, we've returned to overcast Bellingham, WA and my sufficiently sunburnt face couldn't be happier about it.

There are very few events that can ever reach and defy your expectations when you know it is a guaranteed mindblowing, face-melting, and transcendent experience; and Skream & Benga smashing it at Club Mighty in San Francisco this week completely exceeded all of them. The moment the show was announced back in April, we immediately made the decision to take the trip down to SF as this was an event not to miss, and counted down the days, weeks, and months, while listening to Skream's weekly Stella Sessions on Rinse and Benga's recent radio shows on the BBC and KissFM.




Club Mighty was the perfect venue for this event and the system was NO slouch and completely up to the task of the night's bill. Huge speaker stacks in each corner of the small square dancefloor, as well as the huge stageside monitors left sternums rattling, teeth chattering, had some running for cover, and left no prisoners on the dancefloor.

The night started off right with Sam Supa's set, a personal highlight being the drop into Natasja - "Ildebrand I Byen" (200F Remix) currently out on Kraken recordings. From that moment on the evening just continued to gain steam. Soon, the man with the plan, An-Ten-Nae hit the stage




and threw down a set blending everything from dubstep, to glitch, and hip hop to set the mood. The moment that he dropped Scuba's tune aptly titled "Frisco" the entire crowd erupted, as hip hop vocals were layered over the tune, later giving way to that building and thrashing guitar riff before the second drop.




Skream & Benga hit the stage about Midnight and played a b2b 2.5 hour set that I still am trying to wrap my mind around. Highlights of the set: Benga & Walsh- Bassface, Benga&Coki- Night->Rusko- Soundguy Is My Target, Skream- Love Don't Come Easily, Skream- 0800dub, Distance's new tune "Buss" complete with Daft Punk samples, Benga dropping some Run DMC, Skream- Lemon, as well as a bunch of unreleased tunes from the both of them.

Argon Records

Babylon System are a duo, comprised of producers and DJs Roomate and No Thing who hold down their own niche within the west coast U.S. Dubstep movement. Based out of San Francisco, Babylon System have hooked up with fellow SF resident and Argon records label owner Nick Argon and released some killer dubs over the past two years on his label. Most recently, the duo released "Examination of Time / Shevil" on Argon, which has gotten significant play in DJ sets and radio shows throughout the spring. Just wrapping up a tour that took them across the U.S. this May, San Francisco residents should be sure to catch Babylon System back in their home base June 18th at Mighty, lending support for Skream & Benga.
